AI in Design and Participation at the Municipality of Amsterdam
Last Thursday, September 12th,, we had the opportunity to present our Good Public Space at an internal event hosted by the Municipality of Amsterdam, which focused on the state of the art of Artificial Intelligence in the design and participation process. The event showcased various initiatives by the municipality, aimed at harnessing AI in an ethical, sustainable, and human-centric manner. Presentations also featured the latest AI developments from the AMS Institute, highlighting the broader landscape of innovation in this field.
As part of the eventās demo sessions, we presented our Good Public Space workshop, developed in collaboration with UrbanistAI. This workshop serves as a powerful example of how AI can enhance participation projects, improving both the design process and stakeholder engagement. Powered by UrbanistAIās tool, the workshop enables participants to explore new design possibilities, sparking creativity and pushing the boundaries of what public space can be. By integrating AI into the process, we make it more inclusive, efficient, inspiring and tangible.
The day concluded with a fruitful discussion on the future of AI in the public sector. We explored how technology can support municipal work by making processes more efficient, fueling imagination, and even leading us into new and exciting (or sometimes uncertain) territory. It is our responsibility, as informed gatekeepers, to determine where AI genuinely adds value and where it may threaten human agency. To us, AI is a tool with a lot of potential but will never substitute human capacities.Ā Ā
Our collaboration with UrbanistAI exemplifies the potential of combining AI with human imagination to achieve meaningful and balanced outcomes. This is just the beginning of a journey to create better public spaces, powered by both technology and human vision.
